Laboratory Safety Rules
Keep the laboratory clean and tidy
Wash all the apparatus after use .
Report any injury or breakage to your teacher immediately.
Do not enter the laboratory without your teacher's permission .
Do not play or run in the laboratory .
Do not eat or drink in the laboratory .
Do not taste any chemicals .
Hazardous substances found in the laboratory .
Some of the substances in the laboratory are hazardous . We use hazard warning symbols to show the danger of the substances . Hazard waning symbols also can be found on the labels of some bottles in the laboratory . Examples of hazard warning symbols :
Poisonous - bromine , sodium cyanide , mercury . Can causes death or harm if absorbed through the skin , swallowed , inhaled .
Flammable - ethanol , petrol and kerosene ( alcohol ) . Burns easily .
Corrosive - concentrated sulphuric acid and concentrated sodium hydroxide ( acid & alkaline )
Irritant - ammonia and chloroform . Can causes discomfort to the body .
Radioactive - plutonium and uranium . Gives out radiotion .
Explosive - sodium ad potassium . Explodes easily . ( must be kept under paraffin oil )
Laboratory Apparatus
Examples :
Test tube - To contain small amount of chemicals and for carrying out reactions .
Beaker - To contain chemicals and for carrying out reactions.
Conical Flask - To contain chemicals and for carrying out reactions.
Retort stand - To hold or clamp apparatus .
Measuring cylinder - To measure the volume of liquids .
Filter funnel - Used together with a folded filter paper to separate solid from liquids .
Burette - To measure the small volume of a liquid separately .
Pipette - To measure the fixed volume of a liquid .
Test tube rack - To place test tubes while we are not using them .
Test tube holder - To hold test tube while heating .
