1.5 - Is Mass the Same as Weight ?
The concept of weight .
The weight of an object is the pull of the Earth on that object . The pull of Earth is called the force of gravity . The S.I. Unit for weight is the Newton ( N ) .
The weight of an object is not always the same . It changes from place to place , according to how strong the pull of the Earth in that place is . Spring balance is used to measure the weight of an object .
The concept of mass .
The mass of an object is the amount of matter in the object . The mass of an object does not change . It is same everywhere .
The S.I. unit for mass is kilogram ( kg ) . Smaller mass is measured in grams ( g ) or miligrams ( mg ). We use a lever balance , triple-beam balance or an electronic balance to measure mass .
